چکیده

Objective: We made a prospective study evaluating the prevalence of thyroid nodular disease in acromegalic patients. Subjects and methods: Thyroid ultrasound and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy were performed when nodules were detected. Nodules were characterized by cytology and histopathology. Results: We found high prevalence of nodular thyroid disorder, 23/34 (67%) in acromegalic patients. High risk and malignant cytology were significantly higher in acromegalic patients than in our non-acromegalic population (25% vs. 9%). Differentiated thyroid carcinoma was present in 11% of the acromegalic patients. Conclusions: We strongly recommend periodic thyroid evaluation by ultrasound in patients with acromegaly. Fine needle aspiration biopsy should be performed in nodules larger than 10 mm, and in all suspicious nodules, regardless of the size. Arq Bras Endocrinol Metab. 2012;56(5):300-4

Elastosonographic evaluation of thyroid nodules in acromegaly.

OBJECTIVE Ultrasound-elastography (US-E) appears to be a helpful tool for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. In acromegaly, the prevalence of thyroid cancer is still debated. The aims of this study were to evaluate thyroid nodules in acromegaly and to establish the accuracy of US-E in providing information on their nature, using cytological analysis as a reference. SUBJECTS AND METHODS US-E was...

Thyroid nodules in acromegaly: The role of elastography.

INTRODUCTION Ultrasound elastography (US-E) is a helpful tool for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. In acromegaly, multinodular goiter is a common occurrence while the prevalence of thyroid cancer is still matter of debate. Our aims were to evaluate thyroid nodules in acromegaly and to assess the accuracy of US-E in providing information on their nature (benign vs. malignant) using cytological a...

Benign and Malignant Nodular Thyroid Disease in Acromegaly. Is a Routine Thyroid Ultrasound Evaluation Advisable?

Data on the prevalence of benign and malignant nodular thyroid disease in patients with acromegaly is a matter of debate. In the last decade an increasing incidence of thyroid cancer has been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer in a large series of patients with acromegaly with a cross-sectional study with a control group....

Genetic studies in a coexistence of acromegaly, pheochromocytoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and thyroid follicular adenoma Estudos genéticos na coexistência de acromegalia, feocromocitoma, tumor do estroma gastrointestinal (GIST) e adenoma folicular de tireoide

We report on an adult woman with rare coexistence of acromegaly, pheochromocytoma (PHEO), gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), intestinal polyposis, and thyroid follicular adenoma. At the age of 56, she was diagnosed with acromegaly caused by a pituitary macroadenoma, treated by transsphenoidal surgery, radiotherapy, and octreotide. During routine colonoscopy, multiple polyps were identified ...

Ultrasonographic characteristics as a criterion for repeat cytology in benign thyroid nodules Características ultrassonográficas como critério para repetição da citologia em nódulos tireoidianos benignos

Objective: To report the results of repeat fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in thyroid nodules with an initial benign cytological diagnosis that grow during follow-up and/or present suspicious ultrasonographic characteristics. Subjects and methods: The sample consisted of 456 patients with 895 nodules. FNAC was repeated after 12 to 18 months in the case of nodules with suspicious ultrason...
